Job Description

Company Overview

We imagine a future where our freedom is secured by rapid manufacturing of the highest performing materials on earth. We’re building the digital factories of the future to rapidly produce complex components in days to accelerate American innovation on Earth and beyond. Our core focus is the design and manufacture of ceramic thermal management components that are critical to missions such as re-entry from space, interplanetary travel, hypersonic weapons, and more.

Position Overview

As a Ceramics machinist at Canopy, you will have the opportunity to create new materials and processes for a variety of applications ranging from spacecraft re-entry, interplanetary travel, hypersonic platforms, and more. On a given day you could be reviewing drawings for high-precision ceramics components, designing and manufacturing setup tooling, maintaining and operating advanced ceramic processing equipment, and performing critical inspection steps on the parts you build. While many companies today take years to develop and qualify new material systems, we are attempting to do it in months. Experience machining monolithic or composite ceramic systems is required for this position, but prior aerospace/defense experience is not. We are focused on finding smart, autonomous, highly motivated individuals who are passionate about solving new problems. To be successful in this role, you should be self-motivated, thrive in ambiguity, and be able to lead your own projects to completion. We strive to create a culture that incentivizes high performers and disruptors rather than maintaining the status quo.

Responsibilities

  • Operate high-precision ceramics processing equipment based on Work Order and Standard Operating Procedure documentation.
  • Fabricate tooling for setup on machines.
  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Advise Product Development and Manufacturing teams on part design.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Maintain workcenter cleanliness for equipment and tools.
  • Utilize appropriate PPE and conform to all shop safety practices where necessary.
  • Train additional Canopy operators and engineers on equipment operation processes and procedures.
  • Follow and help build Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) procedures.

  • Experience machining hard monolithic ceramics such as alumina, zirconia, aluminum nitride, silicon nitride, and/or silicon carbide, >2 yrs preferred.
  • Experience operating cutting, grinding, and polishing equipment for ceramics.
  • Experience using various kinds of handheld inspection equipment.
  • Fundamental understanding of tooling design and setup processes for ceramics machining equipment.
  • Strong written communication skills, specifically pertaining to reading/interpreting drawings and requirements and generating quality documentation.
  • Desire to work at a startup.

Nice to have’s (but not required) - you should still apply even if you don’t have all of these

  • Experience operating and processing data from precision inspection equipment, such as digital microscopes and 3D scanners.
  • Experience metallizing/joining ceramic components using brazing, glass filler, or other methods.
  • Experience operating mechanical test equipment such as servohydraulic load frames.
  • Design experience, preferably in SolidWorks.
  • Prior startup experience.
  • Prior experience working in a highly regulated environment such as medical or aerospace.

Additional requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary

Compensation and Benefits

  • Pay range: $80,000-$160,000/yr + performance incentives
  • Company stock options
  • Unlimited PTO

  • 100% Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage for employee and family

Actual level and base salary determined on a case-by-case basis and could vary depending on education, job-related knowledge and skills, fit with the company, and experience.
