The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is an independent research center housed at NYU?s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Founded in 2008, the Research Alliance conducts rigorous studies on topics that matter to New York City?s public schools. Job Description:

The Research Alliance invites applications for a Part-Time Data Analyst / Communications Associate. The person in this role will contribute to a range of studies examining educational equity in NYC. They will be responsible for processing and analyzing data; developing compelling data visualizations, infographics and written summaries of key findings and recommendations; and supporting the production, release and dissemination of Research Alliance work. We seek candidates from diverse backgrounds, particularly from groups that are underrepresented in education policy and research.

Responsibilities

  • Work with project leads and the data production specialist to develop and implement data processing, storage, retrieval, documentation, and quality assurance systems for data in the Research Alliance archive and project-specific datasets.

  • Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analyses for various Research Alliance studies, including those assessing district-wide conditions and trends in educational equity.

  • Assist with the development, promotion, administration, and analysis of a survey of Research Alliance stakeholders. 
  • Assist with the preparation of presentations and reports for diverse audiences of policymakers, practitioners, funders, community members, and researchers. 

  • Create innovative, digitally accessible data visualizations and infographics that effectively communicate findings and lessons from our work.

  • Develop website, e-newsletter, and social media content that speaks to audiences? needs and interests, and promotes the use of evidence from Research Alliance studies.

  • Support the release and broad dissemination of Research Alliance publications.

This position is considered Hybrid-Remote : The number of in person days and expectations for onsite work will be discussed with the supervisor.

In compliance with NYC?s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary rate for this  position is $25-$30. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. 

  • Bachelor?s degree, preferably in public policy, education, economics, statistics, or other relevant social science field. 

  • Demonstrated statistical, programming and database management experience. Successful candidates will be required to know, or learn and become highly proficient in, SAS. 

  • Experience managing and manipulating large datasets (e.g., coding, cleaning, merging, preparing large data files for analysis, etc.).

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office products; familiarity with web design, Adobe Creative Suite, and digital accessibility is a plus. 

  • Experience creating clear, effective data visualizations.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.

  • Attention to detail under pressure. Ability to manage competing demands and complete tasks under time constraints.

  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and work in a collaborative team environment.

  • Interest in/knowledge of NYC?s education system is essential. First-hand experience in NYC Public Schools is a plus.

  • Strong candidates are able to recognize how social/cultural biases may impact research, policy, and communications. 

Compensation:

  • $25-$30/hour, approximately 20 hours per week from September through December 2024, with the possibility of extending the position into 2025.
