About the Position The District Attorney’s Office strives to improve public safety and quality of life for Lane County citizens by prosecuting the guilty, protecting the innocent, supporting children and families, and determining the cause and manner of death in cases of traumatic or unattended death. We are seeking an organized and detail-oriented individual for the role of Medical-Legal Death Investigator. This position involves death investigation duties under the guidance of the District Attorney and Deputy State Medical Examiner, as prescribed by ORS 146.090. Responsibilities Gathering information at scenes and examining bodies for evidence of medical disease and/or injury. Taking quality photos of scenes and bodies for documentation. Interviewing relatives and witnesses to gather pertinent information. Collecting body fluid samples and preserving physical evidence. Preparing detailed reports on deaths investigated. Coordinating the removal of bodies with funeral homes or transport services. Managing personal effects of the deceased and turning them over responsibly. Assisting in death notifications to next-of-kin. Acting as a liaison among families, medical personnel, funeral directors, and law enforcement. Assisting during postmortem examinations as needed. Reviewing police reports, medical charts, and recordings, and summarizing information. Maintaining the office’s file system. Providing testimony in legal proceedings. Representing the office publicly and handling inquiries from various entities. Understanding and applying relevant laws and regulations. About the Division The Lane County District Attorney’s Office, led by Christopher J. Parosa, prosecutes all crimes in the county. Divisions include Criminal, Juvenile, Family Law, Victim Services, and Death Investigations. Our Mission: To enhance public safety and quality of life through prosecution, protection, support, and death determination. Schedule Shift work including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is represented by AFSCME. Training and Experience Five years of experience in medical investigation or related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications Training in paramedicine or nursing. Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. Effective communication skills. Ability to analyze and prioritize tasks independently. Proficiency with office technology. Experience with Oregon Medicolegal Death Investigator Certification or ABMDI certification is preferred. Special Requirements Valid Oregon driver license. Ability to respond to scenes within one hour.
