QUALIFICATIONS Candidates for the position of School Security Officer should have a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant experience in security or law enforcement. They must possess strong observational skills, the ability to assess situations quickly and effectively, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. The candidate should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, allowing them to interact professionally and courteously with students, staff, parents, and community members. Familiarity with security procedures, emergency response protocols, and conflict resolution techniques is required. A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain any necessary certifications for school security personnel are also necessary. The candidate must demonstrate integrity, reliability, and a strong sense of responsibility. Physical fitness and the ability to stand, walk, or run for extended periods are required, as well as the ability to work in various weather conditions.
DESCRIPTION The School Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors within the school premises. This role involves patrolling the school grounds, monitoring security cameras, and responding to incidents or emergencies as they arise. The Security Officer plays a key role in maintaining a positive and safe learning environment by enforcing school policies, preventing unauthorized access, and providing support during school activities and events. They must be able to assess potential threats, manage crisis situations, and work collaboratively with school administrators, law enforcement, and emergency responders.
The work schedule for this position is 4 days per week, at 8 hours per day. GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed) - Patrol school buildings, grounds, and parking lots to monitor student behavior and prevent unauthorized access.
- Respond promptly to incidents, disturbances, or emergencies, including fights, unauthorized visitors, or medical situations.
- Monitor security cameras and conduct regular checks of doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are secured.
- Enforce school policies and rules regarding student behavior, dress code, and attendance.
- Collaborate with school administrators and staff to develop and implement safety protocols and emergency response plans.
- Assist with traffic control during school arrival and dismissal times.
- Escort students, staff, or visitors to and from school buildings as needed.
- Report any security or safety hazards, such as broken windows or faulty locks, to school administration.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of incidents, observations, and daily activities.
- Participate in training sessions and drills for emergency preparedness, crisis intervention, and de-escalation techniques.
- Provide assistance and support during school events, such as assemblies, sports events, or after-school activities.
- Build positive relationships with students to promote a safe and respectful school culture.
- Communicate effectively with law enforcement, emergency responders, and other community resources when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION The School Security Officer reports directly to the Division Supervisor of Security, while also receiving direction from the school's Principal or assigned administrative staff member.
WORK CONDITIONS The School Security Officer works primarily on school grounds and within school buildings. The role requires standing, walking, or running for extended periods and may involve exposure to various weather conditions. The position may also require working evenings, weekends, or holidays, especially during school events or emergencies. The Security Officer must be prepared to respond to incidents that may involve physical confrontation, and they must use appropriate safety measures to protect themselves and others.
