An EKG Technician is a healthcare professional responsible for performing electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) tests to measure the electrical activity of patients' hearts. EKG Technicians work in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and other healthcare settings to assist doctors in diagnosing heart conditions. They prepare patients, operate EKG machines, record test results, and ensure that accurate data is provided for further evaluation by physicians.

Key Responsibilities :
  • Performing EKG Tests :

    • Set up and operate electrocardiogram (EKG) machines to record the electrical activity of patients' hearts.
    • Apply electrodes to the patient’s skin, ensuring proper placement and positioning to capture accurate readings.
    • Monitor patients during the procedure to ensure comfort and correct electrode placement.
    • Record, analyze, and assess the EKG results for abnormalities, such as arrhythmias, heart blockages, or other cardiac issues.
    • Follow all safety and procedural guidelines to ensure high-quality, accurate results.
  • Patient Preparation and Communication :

    • Explain the EKG procedure to patients to ensure understanding and reduce anxiety.
    • Assist patients in positioning for the test, typically either lying down or sitting.
    • Monitor patients during testing for any signs of distress or discomfort, and adjust the process if necessary.
    • Provide basic instructions for the patient, such as remaining still and quiet during the test to avoid interference with the results.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Operation :

    • Operate and maintain EKG machines and other related equipment to ensure functionality.
    • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or issues, and report problems to supervisors or medical technicians for resolution.
    • Clean and sterilize equipment as required to maintain safety and prevent cross-contamination.
    • Keep accurate records of equipment maintenance and testing to comply with health and safety standards.
  • Data Documentation and Reporting :

    • Document all relevant patient information, including medical history and any special instructions for the procedure.
    • Record EKG results in the patient’s medical records and ensure accurate data entry into the hospital or clinic’s electronic health record (EHR) system.
    • Flag and report any abnormal or unusual results to the physician or supervising healthcare professional for further evaluation.
    • Ensure confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Team :

    • Work closely with physicians, cardiologists, and other medical professionals to ensure the accuracy of tests and assist in diagnosis.
    • Communicate any changes in patient condition or test results promptly to the medical team.
    • Provide feedback on patient status and assist in other diagnostic procedures as needed.
  • Quality Control and Compliance :

    • Follow all applicable healthcare regulations and best practices, including those set by HIPAA and OSHA .
    • Ensure proper documentation and follow protocols to comply with industry standards and patient safety requirements.
    • Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with advancements in EKG technology and cardiac care.
  • Patient Follow-up :

    • Provide follow-up instructions to patients, such as advising them to contact their physician for test results or if they experience symptoms after the test.
